Last night I listened to Hall of Fame baseball player Larry Walker give his remarks as the Colorado Rockies retired his baseball jersey number. You only make it into the Hall of Fame and have your number retired if you have done some pretty significant things in your sport.
Yet Walker did not talk about himself or his exploits. He talked about his teammates from his time with the Rockies. He did not talk about them in general platitudes. He recounted specific amazing plays specific players had made. He talked about the fans and how they welcomed him to the team and to the city. He made it about “us” instead of about him.
Who is your team? Have you thanked them recently? Do you regularly and specifically point out their contributions and the impact they have?
