The secret to starting something new or developing a new habit is being consistent. Unfortunately we often sabotage ourselves. We take on too much so we can’t maintain it. Take starting a new gym discipline, for example. Many people start out with ambitious goals that get to be too much of a time or energy drain. Eventually they give up on the whole thing.
Another type of sabotage is to start at a level that is way too difficult. Even video games start at a basic level on which you gain skills, learn the genre, and work your way up to the next level. Set backs teach you something valuable for the next time you try. The same strategy applies to learning a piece of music, lifting weights, adopting new technology.
Start with small goals, be consistent, attain mastery, plan on working up. Mark out the time in your calendar. Enjoy the little successes as you go!
