The test is not the test

Will this be on the test? Groan – a professor’s least favorite question (Right after anything to which the answer is “It’s in the syllabus.”).

I told my students, “The ‘test’ is not the test. The test is when the client is in your office.” (Or, for fire and emergency service personnel, when a real emergency occurs.) As people who would be impacting other people’s lives, they needed to be competent. They needed to start thinking like future professionals instead of like students.

It’s important to see the big picture. Why do you do what you do? How will you use the skills you are learning? What is the investment you are willing to make to become who you want to be?
