I listened to a message yesterday that was ostensibly about peace during trying circumstances. But one phrase repeatedly stood out for me, “the weary world.”
Weary is not a word we typically use these days. But I find it describing how I feel. I’m not over busy. I’m not overwhelmed. I’m just tired. Perpetually. No matter how much sleep I get. Weary. That’s it. Physically and emotionally weary.
Adam Grant’s (now viral article) in the NY Times about “languishing” described how we were doing 13 months into a pandemic. More recently, meetings are being cancelled because people are just exhausted. Weary.
Perhaps the phrase “the weary world” comes from a popular Christmas hymn. The phrase is uncommon enough that my mental connection immediately goes there. But it’s not just about a world that stays perpetually weary. It’s about a weary world that rejoices. There is a thrill of hope for a new and glorious morn.
“The thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn."
