Generous Soul

This is the time of year when generosity gets tapped. Holiday gifts, celebrations, end of year solicitations from charities, “Black Thursday/Friday,” “Cyber Monday,” “Giving Tuesday.” (Wednesday seems to be safe for now.) Aside from the financial strain, there is the stress of giving where you know it is expected, giving where you are not sure what is expected, figuring out the protocols, putting the brakes on out-of-control expectations. Yada, yada.

However, there is something that we too often withhold in this season. Generosity of soul. We’re short on time, short on cash, short on focus, and too often, short with people.

What would it take to be generous with courtesy to a store clerk, generous with a smile to a stranger, generous with the right-of-way to a fellow motorist, generous with your attention to the person you are talking with? We’ve gotten so out of the habit, that some of these things might actually cost us something. However, the yield is worth the price. Let’s start a new tradition this season.
