Who says you have to get it right the first time? (I’m thinking here of the movie Groundhog Day.) There are so many things in my life that I never tried because I was too worried about not doing it right. Failing. Looking foolish. Losing. Not measuring up. Or trying too hard and overdoing it (fitness class, anyone?).
Ironically, I’ve had to write some very long papers to get through grad school and I did not expect to write them on one go. They all took lots of brain-dumps, redeeming the chaos on paper, and editing to make them acceptable.
I think my first mental breakthrough in trying new things was to go to a Zumba class for part of the class and at my own pace. It was fun and I didn’t end up frustrated or sore. Other breakthroughs include posting on social media, writing a few short blogs and trying to stay consistent with it, experimenting with a graphic design for dummies program, and building some simple webpages. I still haven’t mastered selfies or snapping my fingers and TikTok is a non-starter.
Choose your own topic. Anything worth doing is worth doing. You probably won’t get it right the first time.
