Somehow I thought “postmodernism” was the current worldview. Apparently not. Listening to a podcast recently, I heard a new term: metamodernism. Metamodernism integrates aspects of modernism, postmodernism, and premodernism. Everything old is new again. From what I can tell, it’s just a hodgepodge of all the pieces we have in our lives anyway.
Like many philosophical and artistic trends, the pendulum swings between thesis, antithesis, and eventually settles into synthesis. So it appears to be with metamodernism. It’s also somewhat amusing to see the philosophy that declared one school of thought passe become passe itself. (We all know everything when we are young, don’t we?).
And if you’re not quite sure of that – go window shopping. There’s probably something in the store window from your mother’s closet 30 years ago.
