Never Assume

Over Christmas my son and I had a conversation about greeting cards. Somewhere along the way I got the notion that guys don’t like cards. They want something with a bit more substance. Given that my son has lived overseas for a long time, shipping anything worthwhile is a bit of a challenge. Cookies and cake arrived very delayed and moldy. But sending a card did not seem like something tangible enough. When he comes to town, I do something more concrete (favorite meals, cake, mom things).

Fast forward many years, and he mentioned that he always gets cards from someone else in the family. Like that mattered to him. Who knew?

My point is that I didn’t know. It never occurred to me to ask. I took an idea from another source and assumed it was true of all people in that category. There are probably myriad little assumptions that I’ve never questioned. Never even occurred to me to question.

Now I send cards. About one a week – I have a lot of catching up to do.
