Playing It Safe

There was a public service announcement on TV a couple years ago with NFL players saying, “I think I will only give 60% this season.” No player would actually say that without expecting to be cut. However, a lot of us try to get through life that way. Gallup polls show that the vast majority of workers are disengaged at work. Family and close friends “listen” to each other while scrolling on their devices. People faithfully attend worship services but go through the motions while they are there.

For some of us, this is the season of “Lent,” a time of reflection and repentance. It’s not always the big stuff that we need to repent of. Frequently we need to repent of playing small. We don’t live up to what we were meant to be. We don’t show up in our important relationships. We don’t courageously share our amazing ideas and dreams. Maybe it is just safer to play it safe. I’d like to suggest it is not worth the cost.
