it’s about preparing for life.
Getting a job is only one part of it. But so is being able to think constructively about things, creating a culture/city you want to live in, contributing to the polity. A valuable segment of college is devoted to the liberal arts. History, sociology, and anthropology help us know where we came from, what mistakes our ancestors made (so hopefully we can avoid those and make new ones). Engineering and the arts create the “stuff” of our communities.
Yes, I know you can search online for almost anything these days. But who put that information there? Who fact-checked it? Consider what would happen if people did not go to college. How comfortable would you be seeing a doctor? Or driving over a bridge?
What if only some people were allowed to go to college? There was a time that was true in our country. It is still true in some places. I am not arguing that everyone needs to go to college. I just think it still provides a valuable resource in our day and time.
