Your How

Sometimes when thinking about our “why” we generate a list of related ideas. Many of these relate to the things we love to do or the way in which we show up in the world. In other words, how you roll. Quite often you find yourself gravitating to the same kinds of causes or the same ways of contributing. These could include your gifts and talents. These could revolve around the way in which you carry out the things you are passionate about (could be teaching, advocacy, building things…). These are your “hows.”

You may have several “hows” – in my case, brainstorming, seeing patterns, explaining, fixing. If you aren’t sure what they are – ask your friends or co-workers. They know. “Oh, so-and-so, they are always the one who comes up with a different way of looking at things.” Or “they are the one who always makes sure everyone is included.”

If you’ve discerned some of these “hows,” how do your hows line up with your why? Is it immediately clear or do you have to ponder a bit?  Some of your hows might just be for your own well-being so you are refreshed to do the other important things. That’s still worthwhile. Are there places where your hows seem to work in opposition to your why? Hmmm… How did you get there? What do you want to do about it?
