Unless you live under a rock, you interact with people. If you are a computer engineer, you have end users. If you are a scholar, you have patrons. The rest of us mere mortals tend to have jobs and volunteer activities that involve lots of other people.
As we are aligning our why, our how, and our what, who is it in service to? Who do you love to interact with or influence? For example, my target audience is usually educated adults in their 30s through 50s, interested in personal growth. But sometimes it is people of other ages who are interested in personal growth.
Who is it not? I like sharing ideas, but not chasing people around to adopt the program (e.g., getting students to study and do their homework). I’m also not the person to sub in pre-school. I have great gratitude for the folks who love working with that age group.
Who do you usually interact with? Sometimes it’s my target audience. Yay! That’s invigorating. But at times I have worked with students in their late teens or early 20s who were going through the motions. That’s draining.
How could you create more connections with your preferred audience and fewer disconnects? Sometimes we can arrange our professional situations to work with our preferred audience, but not always. In this case, where might you volunteer? Even though it requires time or effort to volunteer, these can actually be life giving. You get to choose your own adventure – who you interact with and the kind of contributions you are making.
