Detours

A bit more about detours. Recently, when someone asked about my story, I drew them a picture of lots of crazy, crooked lines of different colors, all going in roughly the same direction, but definitely not the tidy idea of linear.

I had this funny idea, growing up in 20th century America, that life was supposed to be linear. I’ve mentioned the career aspect in a previous post. The bigger picture for me was that life stages were all linear: school, college, marriage, children, the house, the yard, yada, yada. I know pretty much why I had that picture. What is a bit mystifying is why I thought that was normal or why I thought it was what I wanted. I had plenty of examples at hand of normal lives that were anything but linear. I had personal experience of my own life going in iterations of being a child, being responsible for siblings, then being completely irresponsible again.

One day, admiring someone’s social post, I was a bit wistful that I had not had that life. However, as I thought about it, I would have been bored to death in a very short amount of time. My life has had lots of interesting twists and detours. It’s not quite Frost’s road less traveled, but it has made all the difference.

P.S., Happy birthday to my favorite “Detour” in all the world 😊
