Somehow I missed the whole 90’s post-modern, tear-it-all down era. Ironically, it’s not unlike the 1960s tear-it-all down era, which I thought we were done with. But ideas and fashions go in cycles.
Becoming aware of it, it explains a lot. It gives me a perspective of the framework people grew up with during that era. It gives me a little more empathy (and sadness) for how they see the world. It makes me realize that those of us who think they are hipper and more savvy than the rest of us maybe aren’t.
Without asking why a certain (load-bearing) wall is where it is, let’s just tear it down for a gut remodel. In reacting instead of interacting, they missed out on the wisdom of those who’ve already fought certain battles. I also wonder what they have to pass down to the generations that come after them. They’ve razed some things to the ground. I guess that leaves a place to rebuild. Let’s hope that counts for something.
