Recently I was at a non-work event where one person was consistently cleaning up and finishing up after other people. I didn’t think they should have to do all the work themselves. I got a little annoyed at the folks who were not pitching in and doing their share. I didn’t see it as fair that someone else was cleaning up after them. Not only did they not volunteer to help with the group work, it didn’t seem to occur to them to clean up after themselves. I ended up doing more than I wanted to do. Not that it was a lot of work, it just wasn’t my work. It was our work.
I made my complaint known once to the folks who’d left a mess behind them. And then complained to the rest of the folks about the folks who weren’t helping.
Honestly, it was not my job to fix the situation. I felt bad for the person who was doing the clean up, but that was their choice. I suppose if they had just left everything, folks would have come back to a mess and been fine with that. The issue for me is that this was not mine to fix. I needed to recognize that and own that.
