Quiet islands

We recently had our annual awards dinner at work. For most, it’s a fun, festive evening. For the introverts it can be more of an endurance run. This year I had two wonderful islands during that endurance run.

A great colleague (who runs the tech for the event) and I had a side conversation about introversion and quiet spaces. He shared with me a place that he and his wife go to in Alaska a couple of times a year. It’s quiet. In all senses of the word. While we were standing there, he pulled up a video on his phone of the waves crashing along the pristine beach. Even with all the event busyness in the background, I could hear the waves and feel the peace.

Later in the evening, I had a conversation with my friend’s husband. (We know each other outside of work). We were talking about his art. He has a unique style that is stunning. I was asking how he accomplishes that and he was giving me an explanation. I caught the gist, although much of it went over my head.

I think back to other gatherings I’ve been to where a friend and I got into a deep conversation about something substantive while the rest of the chatter went on around us. I want to seek out more of those islands in the midst of the noise.
