Challenges of the mundane kind

Ironically, in the midst of writing about leadership challenges, I had a more mundane challenge. Figuring out how to replace a smoke detector/alarm in my home.

Home repairs are not my cup of tea. Fortunately for the larger things, there are people for that. You have to pay them, of course, but they know what they are doing, and hopefully with a referral, you can find one who will do a good job. Then there are the smaller things that the professionals won’t be bothered with. Like replacing a smoke detector.

Yes there is Youtube, thankfully. But sometimes the things they show you that should be very simple are a little less so. If you miss a step, it doesn’t work. If you twist something too hard, you might break it. With electricity, you have to find the right circuit breaker to shut off.

I did manage to find the right circuit breaker (which was not the one you’d expect for a smoke detector in the living room). I did manage to reattach all the wires and test the thing. The most confusing part was locking the device into the ceiling mount at the end (go figure). The whole replacement probably should have taken 5 minutes. The next one probably will.
