There is a tension between my two worlds. Or maybe the same tension in each world, but they show up differently.
In the church world, you are not supposed to show off. Be humble. (We have our own version of the tall poppy syndrome.) But if you’re at all gifted, you hope someone will notice and brag on your behalf. Open doors, let you shine.
In the academic world, ideas are the coin of the realm and it matters that you get credit for yours. Publishing, copyright, not plagiarizing from another. We love the brilliant ones (I could name names) as long as they aren’t too cocky.
Sometimes in the church world the pastor might issue a call to action. Not a big call to action, but requiring a step of faith and possibly looking foolish. I have sometimes stepped forward, just to break the ice. To do so could look like showing off. I prefer to think of it as modeling the behavior by showing up.
