Part 3 – Relationships
I love watching Peter Parker with his friends. I think it meets a need I didn’t know was missing. We make movies about superheroes. We don’t make enough movies about ordinary people on ordinary days.
In the early movies, friends discover that Peter is Spider-Man. Ned is in Peter’s room at the wrong time by virtue of their friendship, and MJ connects the dots from his behavior and strange disappearances. He needs these people and he needs to trust them.
Other people discover that Spider-Man is Peter Parker. Tony sees something in Peter and drafts him into a group of superheroes. The ones we would consider bad-asses. But being a super hero is not all puppies and roses. It has unique pressures and requires a unique set of peer support. Tony becomes a much-needed parent figure.
In the church, we need community. Sometimes we need general community and sometimes we need community with others who share our particular gifting and the odd challenges it brings. Pastors need pastors, prophetic people need prophetic people, worship leaders need worship leaders. And sometimes we just need friends to hang out with and play Lego.
