Lessons from Spiderman

Part 2 – Maturation

Peter is a kid. An angsty teenager who realizes he has a gift and he needs to use it for good. The classic line from the movie is “With great power comes great responsibility.”

Peter’s sponsor brings him into the league with the seasoned super heroes, despite their protests. Used to acting on his own, Peter thinks he knows what he’s doing, but experience and wisdom are still in process.

He has the fancy super hero suit, a gift from his mentor/sponsor. In a conversation with Tony, Tony says he needs to stop wearing the suit. Peter responds that he’s nothing without the suit. Tony tells him that’s why he needs to stop wearing it. (Comically he says he doesn’t have any clothes, which reminds me somewhat ironically of Genesis.)

There’s a maturation process to be sure, but at the point we think we’re all about the gifting, we’re not ready to use it. We need gifting plus character.
